What Are the Different Types of Vein Ablation?

If you have been diagnosed with varicose veins or venous reflux, your vein specialist may recommend vein ablation. Many patients in Munster want to understand what that means and what options are available. At Region Vein, Dr. Demetrios J. Karamichos brings decades of experience and advanced certification in venous and lymphatic medicine to help guide each patient through their options with personalized care. In our blog this month, we’re discussing vein ablation, including the types of endovenous ablation we offer here in the office to close diseased veins and restore healthy circulation.

What Is Vein Ablation?

Vein ablation targets veins that are not functioning properly due to valve failure. When these valves stop working, blood flows backward and pools in the legs. This leads to symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, aching, and visible varicose veins.

Ablation procedures close the affected vein from the inside. Once closed, blood naturally reroutes through healthier veins, improving circulation and reducing symptoms.

Thermal Vein Ablation Options

Thermal ablation uses heat to seal the vein. It involves using either laser or radiofrequency energy to deliver controlled heat inside the vein.

These procedures are performed in the office using local anesthesia and typically allow patients to return to normal activities quickly. Thermal ablation has a strong track record for effectively treating larger refluxing veins.

Non-Thermal Vein Ablation

Some patients benefit from non-thermal options, such as chemical vein ablation. Sclerotherapy is the most common type of chemical vein ablation. It uses liquid or foam containing chemicals that cause the vein walls to wither and close.

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, including a unique microfoam approach called Varithena, allows for precise treatment while minimizing discomfort and recovery time.

Conservative Care and Individualized Planning

Not every patient needs immediate procedural treatment. In some cases, conservative measures such as compression therapy, activity changes, and leg elevation may help manage symptoms.

At Region Vein, Dr. Karamichos takes time to evaluate your condition, review your ultrasound findings, and explain the advantages of each option. With more than 30 years in medicine and recognition as a leader in vein care, he focuses on creating a tailored plan for your needs.
